In Laguna Woods the footprint is not ours to move. A manor's patio and walk sit inside a footprint the Mutual approved, so a replacement is cut on the old lines and the work is done in the fit.
That makes a small job an exact one. The old slab is sawcut at its edges rather than broken out past them, so the lawn and the sprinkler lines the Village maintains stay put. The new patio is poured level with the door threshold and flush with the shared walk, because a lip of half an inch at a door is a fall for a resident in their eighties. The finish is a medium broom for grip, the joints match the next manor's, and the slab is pitched off the building a quarter inch to the foot.
The ground under the Village is the same siltstone hillside as the rest of south Orange County, graded into pads in the 1960s, and after 60 years it has finished settling, which is one reason the old slabs cracked and the new ones will not. We still dig to firm ground and compact 4 inches of gravel before the pour, and where a walk crosses an old planter the base goes in two lifts. A manor patio is 100 to 200 square feet, so the mix is pumped from the road.
Nearly all of Laguna Woods is Laguna Woods Village, which opened in 1964, so the slabs here are the oldest we replace. The patio, the walk to the carport, the steps and the garage floor are what the eight jobs below come to, on a set footprint.

Stamped concrete in Laguna Woods is used sparingly, because the Mutual approves the finish and a pattern must match what is beside it. Where it is approved we cast a shallow pattern in a light color, so the surface is still flat enough for a walker, and seal it twice.
A walk in Laguna Woods Village is shared, so it is poured in halves to keep the route open and finished flush at every joint. We sawcut the failed panels, dowel the new into the old at each end, and pour 4 inches with a broom finish, because a half inch lip is a fall for a cane.
Garage floors in the garage manors were poured in the 1960s and have cracked at the door where the apron settled. A new 5 inch apron doweled into the old floor and pitched to the road, on gravel compacted where the fill was, puts the water outside and lets a cart roll in flat.
Decorative finishes in Laguna Woods are chosen for grip before looks. A salt finish or a fine exposed aggregate gives a wet patio a surface a rubber sole holds, and a light color stays cool underfoot. We wash the aggregate proud that evening, joint it to match and seal it.
Retaining walls in Laguna Woods hold the terraces between the higher manors of Third Laguna Hills Mutual and the walks below them. A replacement is footed 18 inches into the siltstone with drain rock and a pipe at its back, and the City permits it past 4 feet, Mutual first.
Interior floors in Laguna Woods are mostly a manor slab leveled for new tile after a plumbing repair has cut through it. We pour the patch over a vapor barrier, dowel it into the old slab, and trowel it flush so the tile runs across the joint without a step a walker could catch.

The Village is three communities under one gate. The co-op manors of United Laguna Woods Mutual are the oldest, from the 1960s, and their patios are the ones with the most cracks. The condominium manors of Third Laguna Hills Mutual came later and sit higher up the hill, with more steps and more slope to drain. The Towers stand on their own. The Mutual decides what may change, so a patio goes back on its own lines, a walk keeps its route, and the finish matches what is next door.
The residents set the working day as much as the Mutual does. Golf carts use the Village roads, so the truck is parked where a cart can pass and the pump line is run along the edge. The old slab is out and the new one in within 2 days, the fresh concrete is fenced until it can be walked on, and the cart path is never closed overnight. Every job here is planned so a resident can get from the door to the carport the whole time, because most will not take the stairs to go round.
